HTML Header Information and Search Engines

When optimizing your pages for search engines, here are the main items you need to know about.

Page Titles

Page titles are shown in the top of a browser window, and as the main link in search results. The title should accurately describe the contents of the page, and should be up to 10 words long. Titles should also be unique to each page on a Website. Aside from the homepage of a site, the name of the business or organization does not necessarily need to be part of the title.

Meta Tag Description

The description usually shows up in search results directly below the title, and it helps search engines properly categorize a Webpage. It should accurately summarize the page content in a sentence or two, and also be unique to each page of a Website.

Meta Tag Keywords

Keywords are no longer used by Google and the other major search engines. Instead the copy on Webpages is scanned by the search engines to determine which words and phrases are relevant to users' queries.
